The collaboration grew directly from my residency at Heron Mill, where Luke and I first met during my Recharging Your Creativity Creative Lab. Luke later presented his piece Smudge as part of Manworks, the platform I curated to share work developed through the residency.

Following the extensive performance research undertaken in The House, I wanted to better articulate my own creative practice and extend the archive, landscape and place-based enquiries that had begun to emerge. Working alongside a musician opened an unexpected dialogue, one in which movement, sound and conversation became equal partners in the creative process.

Our laboratory moved between studio and landscape, particularly along the Sefton coastline, where we experimented with embodied responses to place, memory and improvisation.

Originally, I hoped the collaboration would lead towards a new work, Nana-in-hospital, exploring the early development of the NHS. Although funding was not secured, the research itself proved unexpectedly rich, generating a series of interconnected investigations that developed lives of their own.

These included:

• A seven-part presentation for MA students exploring our collaborative process
• The Conversation Archive, documenting our ongoing creative dialogue

Alongside these thematic explorations we created a series of experimental films, including:

Looking back, Body Voice Bassoon became an important bridge between my studio-based performance practice and the walking, landscape and place-based work that would later develop through Follow the Stone and Walking Words.
